The 2011 Big Snow Festival of Arinsal, Andorra!

During next winter, from the 13th to 20th of March 2011, will be held in Andorra's premier ski resort, Arinsal, the second edition of the Big snow festival which saw its inauguration the same month last year. Its success meant that the operation had to be repeated in 2011. The line up for this year events is still a mystery to all, but if we are to go by last year’s excellent list of artists, we are in for a week of top quality music that will be spun by some of the finest UK and European DJs on the clubbing scene, along with some hardcore partying.
Last year’s event saw the likes of Calvin Harris, Judge Jules, Pendulum and Toddla T rock the scene with some heavy, heavy rhythms, sending the expecting crowd raving like crazy throughout the wee; a sporting feat in itself considering that one must be pretty worn out after a full day of snowboarding or skiing.
What we can tell you though, is that the venue itself will not disappoint you; although you might no get to see much of it as partying will be of the essence during that famous week of March. The Arinsal ski Resort of Andorra is, more precisely, located in Vallnord at an altitude of over 2500m. If you are travelling to Zell am See this summer, you are in definite luck. First because the destination itself is quite a sight to see as it is nesting by the banks of the Zeller See Lake and lies at the foot of the Shmittenhöhe Mountain. And second, because you will not find a holiday town resort that will offer as many activities to keep you and your family busy this summer as well as next winter.

The list of ten things to do that I have compiled here may not be the best, but that would only be because there is such a wide selection of activities to choose from, that to make one that would tickle everybody’s fancy would be near impossible. I am nonetheless confident that the objects found in this list will enthuse quite a few. As you will also notice, the selection has been made in order to offer variety. So, here is your list of ten things to do in Zell am See this summer.

1. Go in search of the rare bearded vulture with some great hiking excursions on the Shmittenhöhe Mountain and Kitzsteinhorn glacier. A guide will take you on tour through the hiking routes, in groups of four, to a maximum of 25, and will help you discover these fantastic peaks with their knowledge of the area and history that is second to none. And if you have children, you can also experience the mountains in the company of llamas, the legendary Andean mammal, that will carry the burden for you and render your trekking session that bit more exotic. Certainly, something for the children to talk about on their return home from holidays.

2. This summer and every summer, you have the possibility to ski and board in the vicinity of Zell am See. That’s right, even during the hot months of July and August. And that is because of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier which is located in the proximity of Zell am See, by the small village of Kaprun, and where the snows are eternal, and covering it 365 days a year.

3. You can ride the impressive woods or mountain paths on the back of our long time four legged companions, and the children will be able to ride their miniature versions. So this is a call to all horse and pony back riding lovers. You’ll simply love it! The natural settings are just phenomenal.

4. This one is for all the adrenalin and adventures seekers. And what better way to pump some adrenalin in your life than with a parachute jump from 3 500 metres of altitude. You will free fall with the assistance of a pro parachutist and, well, will experience something that is not given to everyone.

5. Another activity for the adrenalin seekers and the non claustrophobic which will spice your summer holiday is caving, the art of wriggling yourself through tiny holes and over rocky terrains and through… You get the idea! Guides will take you through Europe’s longest cave passage for an enlightening adrenalin packed excursion

6. You can head to the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and indulge in a golfing session in one of the most picturesque settings in Europe, and possibly the world, for a golf course, or two in this case.

7. Not indulging in some climbing as you are spending your holiday in the Zell am See would be a crime. So here is another activity that you could and should take up, provided like me you do not suffer from height phobia. And to help you with that are at your disposal about 70 routes offering different levels of difficulty.

8. Finding some refreshing alternatives is a must in the summer heat of the Austrian Alps. And such alternatives can be found in the form of water skiing on the Zeller See Lake, as well as wakeboarding and knee-boarding for those displaying a bit more imagination and creativity gliding on the waves.

9. Another water activity on offer in Zell am See would naturally be fishing. Experience the peacefulness of this huge peanut shaped lake, where you are sure to find that oh so quiet retreat where you’ll be able to escape for a fishing session far off the summer madness that can be found in the town centre.

10. The children, on top of the afore-mentioned activities, will be particularly pleased with some of the water activities such as the rubber banana and fun tyre rides. A plethora of other activities for children are also available on site.

In one of my earlier post I told you that Ljubjana was, in summer, a treat to visit. Not only because the temperature is that of the Mediterranean type, but also because Ljubljana is surrounded east, west, north and south by lush nature. Indeed as soon as you leave Ljubljana, you enter forest territory, and I'm not talking about small wooded area in which a couple of trees fight for dear old territory. I'm talking about some seriously lush pieces of Land. I recall once someone talking about Slovenija as the European Jamaica, exactly for its hilly and lush nature characteristic.
And during one escapade a couple of weeks ago, just on the outskirt of Ljubljana, I discovered a nice little spot right by the Sava river. A river that flows through four countries that used to be part of the old Yugoslavia. Namely Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia Herzegovina. This little place that I found was truly a little haven of piece, and safe for a brief naturist encounter, I seemed to own the place. No one in the vicinity, a thumping sunshine and a river as cold as the Arctic Ocean; the perfect ingredients for a nice and relaxing day by the banks of the River Sava! However, one must say that the water was nearly impossible to swim in. I personally found it freezing cold, but I know ofr a fact that that doesn’t deter many. And for those brave enough to venture in the water, they will do so surrounded by some great scenery. Alternatively, you can just grab your kayak and sail it down the river or gather some wood and enjoy a wonderful wild barbecue by the banks of the River Sava.

Furthermore, unlike the cruising boats, these can be hired in the evening, providing thus the perfect spot for the perfect summer boat party.

Zell am See is really great, and as you have just read it, offers some pretty original alternatives to your regular summer holiday. Besides, to reach there is very convenient as it is served quite nicely by the different means of transportation. Fly there and you’ll land in Salzburg, only 50 miles away from your final destination. The same applies if you are traveling by train. The closest main international train station is also located in Slazburg and has regular services from there to Zell am See.

As for the braves who are ready to tackle the summer heat, it will depend on where you are traveling from, but again the directions are pretty straight forward, and the journey, provided you have air conditioning, can be quite a pleasant one. I personally will consider spending my summer holidays this year in Zell am See.

Ljubljana - a place to go to this summer

The place to be at the moment could well be Ljubljana, Slovenia. Finally the weather has decided to resume its normal activities. the month of April and May were very cold, and that is not what we are used to here. Look at the pictures above and they show you what we have come to appreciate. Flowers have blossomed and are carpeting the parks with their bright colours, and look at that baby crow. A sign of new life. And let me tell you that under the sun, Ljubljana becomes a totally different place, a place full of life that is well worth visiting. Alternatively, you can drive down the coast and enjoy the very pretty albeit minuscule coastal area of Slovenia.

My first post here is about the idyllic Zel lam See ski and summer resort, in Austria.
The ski season being over now, it is time to think about the summer season. And Zell am See immediately pops to mind. Located in the Austrian Alps, Zell am See has everything to offer,. A wonderful lake by which banks lies the town of Zell am See, a health resort since 1961. It has its own natural reservoir providing the purest of waters. It also lies at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe, which is a 2000ft high hill, which makes for the perfect decor for trekking, mountain biking and other summery leisure. In winter, it offers all the activities a winter resort thrives on, skiing, snowboarding, spa relaxation.
In terms of accommodations, we can say that Zell am Seehotels offer a variety of prices that range from the cheap hotel rooms (but you can trust Austrians to make even the cheapest of accommodation as cosy as a wintry night in front the chimney), to the luxurious suites that will host you like a king.
